From Home to Anywhere: Essential Hygiene Tips for Muslims

Lets picture starting your day off with a sense of freshness and purity, away from the dirt and sweat of the day. Cleanliness that transcends the ordinary- a state of purity that restores your mood and spirit as well.

Keeping up with personal hygiene isn’t just a good habit; it’s also a way to show respect for ourselves and others, and it’s considered an important part of our faith.. Following the teachings of Islam and the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH, we muslims must prioritize remaining in a constant state of purity even more as according to the primary teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)- cleanliness constitutes half of our faith. Hence muslims are obligated to maintain cleanliness in not only themselves but also their environment. Focusing our attention towards our house and surroundings is just as crucial.

Allah (SWT) has designed the link between each commodity of life so meticulously that the state of our environment has an effect on our mental health and vice versa. Which is why our religion guides us to maintain tidiness in all aspects of life as it adds an element of stability. This is just another minute example of how the Quran and the Prophet (PBUH)’s sunnah acts as the perfect guidance for anyone seeking to lead a righteous, positive, and just life. As mentioned in the Quran:

“Verily, he [truly] prospers who purifies himself.”[87:15]

Additionally, an important verse of Surah Tawbah highlights the importance of external purity in the eyes of Allah while the following verses of the surah stress the necessity of purifying one's heart and soul.

“Certainly, a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. In it are men who love to be purified. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.” [9:108]

Ṭahāra is the Islamic practice of maintaining cleanliness and purity for religious activities, based on two simple ideas. First, certain actions like going to the bathroom, having sexual intercourse, or menstruating makes a person not ready for religious rituals. Second, some substances, such as pork or blood, are naturally unclean or can make a person, place, or object unclean, rendering them unfit for rituals. In Islam, Ṭahāra involves removing these impurities using acceptable methods, ensuring that individuals stay clean and prepared for their religious duties. There are multiple types of physical tahara; Minor Tahara includes Wudu and Tayammum, while major Tahara includes Ghusl and Istinja.

To emphasize one specific aspect, Istinja is the Islamic practice of cleansing oneself with water after urination or defecation. This practice is obligatory in Islam. Toilet paper and other clean items, such as stones, can be used alongside water to assist in the cleansing process. But the main goal is to remove any impurities and maintain hygiene according to islamic laws and principles.

It is quite evident how important it is to remain in a constant state of cleanliness. However, it can prove to be extremely difficult to maintain those standards, in a place of uncertainty or emergency.

In the possibility that you’ve found yourself in need of something while you’re on a long-haul flight, camping off-grid, taking off on a road trip or in a place such as; an office space or an educational institute, that is not equipped with the necessary facilities to keep up with your hygiene, it is understandable how you might feel helpless, desperate, and uncertain about how to handle the situation. The lack of proper facilities can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to maintain the cleanliness and purity that are so important.
